Sunday Moodboard: Floriography

Yesterday’s post about flagging got me thinking about floriography and representations of BDSM in visual media [1].

Not necessarily together, mind, but kind of just in general? There is a significant amount of overlap, though, and that intersection is kind of my inspiration for this week’s mood board.

Now I’m by no means saying that Millais’ Ophelia is analogous to VIXX’s Chained Up MV with regard to blatant BDSM themes (but I definitely think I could). I am saying—kind of, probably—that there is a tradition of cryptography in Western/European BDSM that’s pretty dang hard to ignore [2].

It would be neat to try and map a linear progression of cryptographic methods in BDSM communities, honestly. Definitely it’ll be something I plan on looking into more as time passes on [3].

[1] A close contender for this week’s mood board was dysfluency in EDM because of course Pride is full of stuttery EDM. Maybe next week?

[2] Not that this is Richard von Krafft-Ebing’s fault, but I wanna give him a big shout-out here for publicly humiliating Leopold von Sacher-Masoch in Psychopathia Sexualis (1886) following the release of Venus in Furs (1870).

[3] Unless someone’s beat me to it? That would be great. If anyone knows of something like that I’d definitely like to hear about it in the comments!
